Lance Brazelton Empowers Stillman College’s Black Male Initiative and Williams Institute for Leadership

Award-winning author and internationally acclaimed speaker Lance Brazelton
delivered a powerful and transformative keynote speech to the students of
Stillman College’s Black Male Initiative (BMI) at an event hosted at First
Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. The event was a celebration
of the program’s achievements, supported by the Lt. Gen. Willie J. Williams
Institute for Leadership, Education Equity, and Race Relations in America.
A Voice for the Future of Black Male Leadership
Lieutenant General Willie J. Williams, one of the first
African-American Marines to achieve the rank of three-star general, personally
recommended Brazelton for the keynote address after witnessing his impact as a
speaker for the Huntsville Rotary Club’s STRIVE Mentoring Program. Recognizing
Brazelton’s unparalleled ability to connect with young leaders, the Black Male
Initiative Board sought his expertise to inspire their students, who are
navigating challenges familiar to Brazelton’s own journey as a young, Black
intellectual overcoming systemic barriers.
The BMI program, a student development initiative at Stillman
College, focuses on increasing matriculation, retention, and graduation rates
for men of color. Brazelton’s message resonated deeply with attendees, offering
real-world strategies for navigating a changing world while staying true to
their identity and purpose.
Revealing the Invisible Barriers
In his keynote, Brazelton tackled the topic of
indirect-secondary trauma, an often-unseen barrier faced by young, Black men in
professional spaces. He educated BMI students on how their intellect, ambition,
and character would be tested in ways that often surpass their peers. By
equipping them with tools to maintain their integrity and embrace their
identity, Brazelton inspired the students to rise above prejudice and showcase
their authenticity as an asset.
“Your actions will speak louder than your intentions ever
could,” Brazelton shared. “When you remain rooted in who you are, the pureness
of your character becomes your strongest weapon against systemic doubt.”
A Vision for Brotherhood and Leadership
Brazelton extended his vision of leadership during a
reception at the Huntsville Country Club for program donors and supporters,
where he spoke alongside Alabama State Senator Bill Holtzclaw. He emphasized
the importance of brotherhood among the students, urging them to remain united
as they climb to new heights of success.
“Even as you pave your individual paths, always wear the same
jersey spiritually. A true brotherhood transcends personal accomplishments to
create a global community of leaders,” Brazelton said, igniting a sense of
responsibility and unity among the future leaders.
